International Yoga Contest – A Global Celebration of Wellness in Rishikesh

The International Yoga Contest, held annually in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, is a week-long global event promoting yoga as a path to holistic health and spiritual harmony. In 2025, it took place from March 9 to March 15 at the renowned Parmarth Niketan Ashram, drawing thousands of participants and spiritual seekers from across the world.

Often referred to as the "Yoga Capital of the World," Rishikesh provides an ideal setting for this event, nestled on the banks of the holy Ganges River and surrounded by the foothills of the Himalayas. The contest is more than a competition—it's a celebration of the ancient Indian discipline of yoga, which dates back thousands of years and is now recognized globally for its physical, mental, and spiritual benefits.

The event includes multiple components:

  • Daily Yoga Sessions: Expert yoga instructors from India and abroad conduct open-air classes each morning and evening. These sessions cater to all levels—from beginners to advanced practitioners—and cover various forms including Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and Kundalini.

  • Workshops and Lectures: Renowned gurus and scholars deliver lectures on yoga philosophy, Ayurveda, mindfulness, pranayama (breathing techniques), and meditation. These sessions explore how yoga is not just physical exercise, but a way of life that brings balance and clarity.

  • Yoga Competitions: Participants showcase their mastery in yoga postures (asanas) in formal contests, judged by certified panels based on flexibility, form, control, and composure. Prizes and certificates are awarded, recognizing dedication and excellence.

  • Cultural Programs: Each evening features performances of Indian classical music, dance, and spiritual discourses. Cultural exchange is a key highlight, with delegations from different countries sharing their practices and interpretations of yoga.

  • Clean Ganga Campaigns: As part of spiritual service, participants engage in cleaning the riverbanks and planting trees—an effort to blend wellness with environmental responsibility.

The International Yoga Contest is more than an event; it's a transformative experience. Attendees often describe it as a journey inward, where they not only refine their physical practice but also experience profound inner peace. It reinforces India's position as the spiritual heart of global wellness and continues to bridge ancient traditions with modern aspirations for health and harmony.
